Sergio Lucato

Divemaster, Research Diver & Master Scuba Diver

His full name is Dr. Sergio Luis dos Santos e Lucato, but we all just call him Sergio. He is a research scientist during the day and a AAUS certified research diver and terrific Malibu Diver PADI Divemaster during his off-hours, although most friends would classify his day-time activities as a mere way to kill time between dives.

Born in Brazil, Sergio started diving in the cold and muggy lakes of Germany in '93 before he decided to seek a sunnier place and moved to Santa Barbara. After spending a couple years at UCSB as a post-doctoral researcher in Materials Science and volunteering as research diver, he moved to a permanent position as research scientist for a R&D center and started working as divemaster for Malibu Divers. If he is not in the lab, you will find him diving the Channel Islands or off-roading in the Mojave desert.

Sergio is also an excellent photographer and chef.  He usually prefers to stay on the backside of the camera and has produced a wonderful photo book of his work. When describing his photos - he says, "Living near the ocean is always special. There is something about it that fascinates everybody. And once one breaks the surface and starts to get a glimpse into the underwater life, that fascination only becomes stronger. Take a moment to relax and visit the beautiful underwater worlds of the California Channel Islands." As an avid underwater photographer he is constantly adding to his portfolio; be sure to check his Flickr page for the latest updates

His favorite dive spots are the walls and kelp forests of San Miguel island and oil rigs, but there really isn't a bad dive anywhere for him.
