— The Coast Guard rescued two fishermen and their dogs Oct. 4 from a
small, isolated beach, after a lobster fishing boat went aground on
Santa Barbara Island.
When the Coast Guard received word of the distressed boaters, a
helicopter from Air Station Los Angeles was deployed. The copter was
unable to assist with the rescue efforts because of overhanging cliffs
on the remote rocky coast of the island -- however, it was able to
locate the fishing vessel, named Sassy, making it possible for crewmembers from a Coast Guard cutter to rescue everyone aboard.
Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal , based in Corona del Mar,
arrived on the scene to assist in the rescue efforts. Crewmembers from
the cutter were able to maneuver a small boat through the 4-foot surf
and thick kelp beds to rescue the distressed fishermen, who had put on
immersion suits and wrapped their life jackets around their two dogs to
assist in the rescue.
After rescuing the men and dogs, the small boat returned to Narwhal , where the four were taken on board and transported to the mainland.
Lt. Kris Ensley, Narwhal's commanding officer, stated the rescue was one of the most challenging he has ever performed. |
