Beginning Open Water Scuba for non-certified divers

This SCUBA Camp is a one-week daytime program that provides classroom, pool and open water instruction for a Jr. Open Water and Open Water Diver Certification. All sessions are held at our class and pool in Malibu and open water dives are conducted at Catalina Island.  (If you don't have a week to devote, do it in 2 weekends with our regular course or even less with eLearning!!) We're able to accommodate just about any schedule, ask us how.

Class and Pool Sessions start daily at 9:00 AM and run until 5:00 PM on most days. All classes are taught by certified SCUBA Instructors. (Parents are always welcome and encouraged to join students in the course.)

Open Water dives are conducted at Catalina Island.  Ranked as one of the top ten diving destinations in the world today, Catalina Island offers you the chance to see a breathtaking underwater environment filled with a boundless array of life.  We take you to see the best that scuba has to offer in southern California.  Enjoy the kelp forest, colorful Garibaldi, moray eel, halibut and other marine life unique to California. The Malibu Divers staff will lead all training dives.  Why go any where else?

The cost of the SCUBA Camp includes all instructional materials, (textbook and video or CD-ROM and eRecreational dive tables), lifetime certification card, instruction tuition, use of our SCUBA  equipment in the pool and ocean (tanks, regulator, buoyancy compensator, wetsuit, hood, and weights), transportation via Catalina Express, and while in Catalina, and your own personal set of SCUBA gear (mask, fins, snorkel, booties, gloves, and gear bag).  Meals, personal expenses, parking at the Catalina Express and transportation to the Catalina Express are not included.  Every effort will be made to car pool to the port of Long Beach.

You must  be in good health, know how to swim, and bring a bathing suit, towel, suntan lotion, water, and shoes. We include lunch  and snacks on the academic class and pool days of the camp.  All other gear will also be provided including your own personal set of SCUBA gear, retails for over $325, which you get to keep.

An orientation session is required when signing up for SCUBA Camp.   A parent or legal guardian must be present too complete the paper work and at this time the student can be professionally fitted for their personal SCUBA gear.

At the successful completion of this program, a lifetime certification issued by PADI, the largest and best-known training agency in the world today. This program involves five full days of training beginning when you arrive and ending on Friday. Home study of 8-10 hours must be completed before coming to camp (students will not be allowed to participate in the program if this work is not done!).

Pool Session 1 & 2 - Introduce snorkel & SCUBA gear, gear set-up, swim test, snorkeling, buoyancy check, regulator retrieval & clearing, mask clearing, alternate air source use, etc., free time in pool.
Tuesday - Day 2 Curriculum
9:00 AM - 11:30 AM (moves to July 4; 12:15 PM)
Classroom Modules 3 & 4
11:30 AM - 12:15 PM Lunch
12:15 PM - 5:00 PM
Pool Session 3 & 4; Review of regulator and mask cleaning, controlled emergency swimming ascent, BCD and weight removal & replacement, neutral buoyancy exercises, etc., navigation free time in pool.
Wednesday - Day 3 Curriculum
6:15 AM - 5:00 PM Open Water Dives 1 - 3 Catalina Island
Thursday - Day 4 Curriculum
9:00 AM - 11:30 AM Classroom Modules 5 & Final Exam
11:30 AM - 12:15 PM Lunch
12:15 PM - 5:00 PM Pool Session 5; Fun & Practice of SCUBA Skills, Optional Free diving skills, free time in pool.
Friday - Day 5 Curriculum
6:15 AM - 5:00 PM Open Water Dives 4 & 5 Catalina Island (Dive 6 optional*)

All attendees wishing to participate in the Summer Scuba Camp must contact Malibu Divers directly before June 24 for the July 4-8 class and before July 29 for the August 8-12 class  to allow time for home study to be completed in time.
