The SCUBA BSA program provides an opportunity for scouts to try diving without committing to a full week of instruction. --RUGGED SCUBA--OPEN WATER SCUBA - 5 Day Certification Training Interested in diving anywhere in the world? Then su ccessful completion of Rugged Scuba (OWS) will give scouts a lifetime certification issued by PADI, the largest and best-known training agency in the world today. OWS involves five full days of training beginning when you arrive at camp and ending on Friday. Home study of 12-16 hours must be completed before coming to camp (scouts will not be allowed to participate in the program if this work is not done!). NOTE: This year we are going to be using the PADI
eLearning system where all home study, quizzes and exams will be completed on-line
by participants prior to coming to camp. A link to a free tutorial may
be found on our home page, www.malibudivers.com. Scroll down the page to the
eLearning Banner and click on it. Participants will be emailed access
codes for eLearning starting around mid-March, with earlier weeks at camp
receiving theirs first. The eLearning program generally takes
participants anywhere from 12-18 hours to complete. This system does not
lend itself to "group study", however Malibu Divers instructors will be able
to monitor each student's progress and will be available to answer
questions and provide guidance. We have had extensive experience with
this program over the last few years and find that students find this program
easy to use and comprehend and they come to us better prepared than those
preparing with the old style book & DVD. All quizzes and
exams are taken on-line (prior to coming to camp) and are monitored by our
instructors. Please do not register for eLearning without your access codes as no
credits will be issued!
Registration for OWS must be done at least 4 weeks before their week at camp—late sign ups are not allowed! The course fee includes home study materials and snorkel gear valued at over $300 which scouts get to keep. Use of all additional SCUBA gear during the program is included. Scouts must provide a bathing suit, towel and 2 passport sized photos of themselves. MINIMUM AGE: 12 years old.
REGISTER: Sign-up with the West Valley Scout Office (818 785-8700) Camping Department or register on-line. Space is limited, sign-up early!
