Scientific Research Diver

Scientific Research Diver

As a scientific diver, you will learn how to observe and collect data relating to our marine environment. With this knowledge and your up-close relationship to the aquatic habitat, you can begin to participate in the collection of scientific data that can change the future of our world.

With the AAUS (American Academy of Underwater Science) standards in mind, our program for a certified diver is to gain a broad understanding of AAUS history and regulations, scientific dive planning, data collection principals, and methods, research equipment, diving tools, and scientific diving opportunities. In water skills will focus on improving buoyancy, navigation, using transects and quadrats, and the actual collection of scientific data.

Your Scientific Diver program will be based on your career aspirations.  We conduct a thorough indepth interview to review your current level of training and customize your program for the type of research you intend to do or desire. One of the benefits in addition to the highest quality diver education and training, your program is based on your timing and availability.

What are the requirements to get started or next steps?
Malibu Divers has a long history over 40 years of training divers and certifying them be eligible for their AAUS certification by working closely with local AAUS Dive Safety Officers. One of the common misunderstandings about AAUS is that, unlike the traditional recreational diving model, it is not a certifying agency. It provides consensual standards for safe diving to the AAUS member organizations (universities and research members) which, in turn, train and qualify the divers under their oversight. The program is extensive and requires a minimum of 100 hour training course in advanced techniques which includes at least 12 dives. Malibu Divers offers the vast majority of training you will need under the guidance and ultimate approval of an AAUS organizational member, which is required to become a scientific diver.
