You, your kids and friends can train together and have the most incredible time shared with memories and adventures that last a lifetime! Now is the time to dive into the PADI Jr. Open Water Diver course, the most popular dive program in the world! This is your ticket to a lifetime of fun, and intense adventure with Malibu Divers, the dive store with the experience in scuba training for youths and sets the standard for quality and safety in the Los Angeles diving community.
Why Malibu Divers? It is where your children become more than Jr. Open Water Divers
As a certified PADI Jr. Open Water Diver, your children will receive the most widely recognized and respected scuba diving training in the world. When they learn at Malibu Divers they will be taught to be safe, responsible and confident scuba divers. We love teaching kids how to scuba dive. Before you go anywhere else, talk to us.
What do I need to start?
Virtually any child over 10 years old who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn a PADI Jr. Open Water Diver certification. They must be in good physical health with no pre-existing medical conditions and have developed a level of basic strength and coordination, possess emotional maturity to focus and follow directions. For safety, all students complete a brief questionnaire (see Medical Release
) that asks about medical conditions that could be a problem while diving. If none of these apply, you sign the form and you're ready to start. If any of these apply, as a safety precaution your physician must assess the condition as it relates to diving and sign the second page of this medical form that confirms fitness to dive. Any questions? Contact us or speak to your physician.
Who can learn?
For those of you who are between 10 and 14 (or have a child between these ages), and would like to participate, then the PADI Jr. Open Water Diver program is the right beginning scuba program available to you. (If you are going to our Boy Scout or Girl Scout program, the minimum age is 12 years old.)
Are you not sure if scuba is right for you? Ask us about doing a introduction to scuba which means you get to try it by taking a dive in our pool and then decide. This experience is called Junior Discover Scuba Diving
. It's an excellent way to determine if scuba training is something you want to continue to do.
Between the ages of 10 and 11 years, because once you are certified as a PADI Jr. Open Water Diver, you may only dive with a PADI Professional, a certified parent or certified guardian to a maximum depth of 12 metres/40 feet, all children of these ages must do their Ocean training dives privately with us. (On their/your 12th birthday, you can receive additional training to allow you to go to 60 feet.) If you are older than the age of 14 you can begin the PADI Open Water Diver program
What will I do?
Throughout the course, you'll learn fundamentals of scuba diving, including dive equipment and techniques. You earn this rating by completing classroom academics (we use online training), pool training and practice sessions and the required 4 open water ocean dives to be certified. We use online training because it has been proven that everyone learns faster and better when they can do it at their own way and pace. It also allows individual attention and more time in the pool to practice and learn skills. Want to learn more about our Classroom?
How long will it take?
PADI programs are performance based. You proceed as you demonstrate mastery of the course skills. This allows you to work at a pace that is comfortable for you. Usually online training takes between 12-18 hours of home study. This home study needs to be completed prior to the weekend of your class and pool sessions. Our regular Class and Pool sessions are scheduled for most of the day on Saturday and Sunday. Most students do their Ocean checkout dives the following weekend. It does not have to be consecutive weekends. In summary, the total time is home study and two weekends. If that schedule doesn't work for you - call us to discuss your needs and we'll figure out a new plan.
